Elly Kedward is a fictional character who was first mentioned in The Blair Witch Project and who represents "The Blair Witch" in each of its subsequent sequels, books, video games, and memorabilia.
Elly was accused of witchcraft in the town of Blair in the late 1700s. She was banished to the forest where she eventually died. For years afterward, children would go missing or die. Entire search parties were found brutally murdered under mysterious circumstances.
In the 1940s a hermit named Rustin Parr was arrested for the murder of seven children. He initially claimed he did it for an old woman ghost. He was later hanged for his crimes, though in the documentary The Burkittsville 7 his guilt is brought into question.
When Heather Donahue and her friends investigated the legend in the 1990s, they too wound up disappearing in the woods, leaving behind only the footage they shot for their film project.
