R. L. Stine

R. L. Stine, born October 8, 1943 in Columbus, Ohio, is a prolific author of primarily children's horror books. He is best known for his Goosebumps and Fear Street series. His books have sold over 400 million copies as of 2008.

In the mid-nineteen-eighties, Stine began writing horror books directed toward young audiences. In 1989, he wrote the first book of the long-running Fear Street series. It was titled The New Girl. Stine wrote over fifty other titles for the original series, selling over 80 million copies as of 2010. There have been several other spin-off series stemming from the original Fear Street line.

1992 marked the beginning of the wildly popular Goosebumps series that sparked several spin-offs and a popular television series. There were sixty-two books total in the original Goosebumps line which ran until 1997. More than 300 million Goosebumps books have been sold to date. At one point, at the height of its popularity, Goosebumps books sold 4 million books per month.

As of the time of this article, Stine continues to produce ample amounts of reading material for children. He continues spin-offs from both Goosebumps and Fear Street, as well as new series like Mostly Ghostly, The Nightmare Room, and Rotten School.
